Simple hacks to kickstart your focus
Starting a task, whether it’s writing, cleaning, cooking, or working out, often feels like an uphill battle.
This morning, I set a 30-minute timer for my freewriting practice, hoping it would push me forward. But I hit that familiar resistance. This struggle isn’t limited to writing; it can happen with anything — unless hunger drags us into the kitchen, or a looming deadline kicks us into gear.
So why does getting started feel so tough, and how does the struggle suddenly disappear?
The breakthrough happens when we enter a state of flow, where the effort appears to vanish.
We all crave that moment, but reaching it requires finding the right balance between tasks that are too easy and those that are beyond our capacity.
According to neuroscience research, the flow state increases learning by 230%, creativity by 600%, and productivity by 500% (Flow Research Collective).
In the flow state, you silence those monkey-mind thoughts in your head, you’re completely engaged with the task at hand and nothing else seems to matter, you’re fully engaged and immersed. You feel content and fulfilled while doing your best work.
