Breaking Free from Attachments

A poem about addiction and reclaiming freedom

A parasite within.
Both a habit and a hindrance,
it has a strong hold on us —
a belief that became a habit,
that took over,
the one we lost ourselves to.

The addiction,
the pull towards our personal hell,
a moment’s craving,
a temptation,
a tethered existence,
a dependency without which
we believe we will come undone.

Blind to the truth,
it has torn us apart,
one string at a time,
creating a detrimental bond.

Seeing this delusion for what it is,
an attachment,
is the only way to free us
from the chains of our suffering.

Seeing the cost of its incessant pull —
the destruction,
the life not lived,
the crippling beliefs.

Keeping us chained
and coming back for more,
but with no fulfillment in sight.

Without the use of force,
without declarations,
or exertion of will,
just by seeing
the truth of our dependencies,
we will be free.
